tell 當「分辨」時，後面接 by 或 from 的差別在哪?

• tell 這個動詞常常做「分辨；確定」使用，在英文中常聽到 It’s hard to tell. 也就是說「很難說、說不準」的意思。
• 若想進一步說明做決定的「根據」，tell 之後會接 by 這個介系詞，by 後面接的是「判別的依據」; tell後面出現另一個介系詞 from 時，解釋為「辨別、識別」。

Can you tell who that is over there? 你看得出來那邊那個人是誰嗎?
I could tell by the depressed look on his face that Jane rejected his proposal. 從他那沮喪的神情看來，我可以確定珍拒絕了他的求婚。
The twin brothers look so much alike that I have trouble telling one from the other. 這對雙胞胎兄弟如此相似，以致於我分辨不出他們誰是誰。

• tell 當「分辨」之意時，搭配的介系詞還有 apart。tell...apart 就是「分辨出 ⋯」。

The twins are so similar that only their parents can tell them apart. 那對雙胞胎像到只有爸媽才分得出他們誰是誰。
Can you tell Chinese people apart from Japanese people？你能分得出來中國人和日本人嗎？

「在角落」要用 in the corner 還是 on the corner ?

• corner 是「轉角」的意思，但如果用的介系詞不同，意思也就不同。

• on the corner 可用在街角，或是像書桌一角，這種開放空間的角落；in the corner 用來指稱室內或內部的轉角，比如屋子裡的一角：

There’s a gas station on the corner. 街角有間加油站。
Will this cabinet fit in the corner？  這個櫃子放得進這個角落嗎？。

你什麼時候會到臺北?

每次要描述「到達某地點」，用 in、on 還是 at 老 是搞不清楚，到底要怎麼選用呢?

• 動詞 arrive 之後搭配的介系詞，要依據地方的規模來選擇，如果是範圍較大，例如城市或國家，就用in；抵達某棟建築物、或是到某場合，用 at；到達某樓層，則用 on。

I just arrived in Brazil yesterday. 我昨天剛到巴西。
We arrived at the airport two hours before our flight. 我們在班機起飛前兩小時到了機場。
When firefighters arrived on the 5th floor, it was too late to put out the fire. 當消防員到五樓的時候，要撲滅這場火已經太遲了。
