get out of hand

這個片語可不是在說東西從手上掉下來唷。當你想形容事情已經「失控，一發不可收拾」，就可以用get out of hand 來表現這種棘手的狀況。

A: I hear somebody called thepolice on you last night.

我聽說昨晚有人叫警察去你家。

B: Yeah. The party at my housekind of got out of hand.

對啊。我家的那場派對有點失控了。

I’m an old hand.

當某人是個「老手」old hand，就表示他在某個領域或某項技能上經驗豐富。如果你要說「我是個新手」，就是 I’m a newbie.

A: Have you been sailing before?

你以前玩過帆船嗎？

B: Yeah. I’m an old hand.

有啊，我是個老手囉。

go hand in hand

這個片語可不是手牽手的意思。想表示事情交互影響、相互伴隨，有 A 即有 B，兩者「連在一起，伴隨而來」就可以用 go hand in hand表示。

A: Why is there so much crime in this neighborhood?

為什麼這一區的犯罪率這麼高？

B: Crime and poverty go hand in hand.

犯罪和貧窮總是伴隨而來。

know sth. like the back of one’s hand

對某人事物的熟悉程度，就和對自己的手背般一清二楚，也就是中文的「瞭若指掌」。

A: Are you ready for the exam?

你都已經準備好考試了嗎？

B: Yeah. I know the material like the back of my hand.

對啊，這些教材我都倒背如流了。

one’s hands are tied

如果不知道這句話是什麼意思，看看完整說法就明白了：ask for sb’s hand in marriage，指「(男方向女方)求婚」，但現今多將 in marriage 省略，另外要提醒一下，這裡的 hand 要用單數形態表示。

A: I’m thinking of asking for Helen’s hand.

我打算向海倫求婚。

B: It’s about time!

也該是時候了！

get one’s hands on sth.

也可以說 lay / put one’s hands on sth.，表示「弄到，得到（某物)」。但若說 get one’s hands on sb.，就有兩種含義，一為「與某人合作」，另一為「處罰某人」，意思視上下文而定。

A: Do you know where I can get my hands on a Russian-English dictionary?

妳知道我要到哪裡才買得到俄英辭典嗎？

B: They probably sell them at the campus bookstore.

校園裡面那家書店大概有賣。

You’re in good hands with me.

這句話是美國一句很有名的廣告詞，意思是「我辦事，你放心」。in good hands (with sb.) 是「受到細心照料」或「已交給可靠的人」。

A: I have no idea where we are.

我搞不清楚我們在哪裡。

B: Don’t worry, you’re in good hands with me.

別擔心，有我帶路，你放心。

hand it to sb.

hand 當動詞，hand sth. to sb.（把某物遞給某人）是很基本的句型，但 hand it to sb. 是個固定用法，表示「稱讚某人」，其中的 it 就是讚美。下次當你要讚美別人時，記得試試這句 I gotta hand it to you！

A: So what do you think of the spaghetti?

你覺得這義大利麵怎麼樣？

B: I gotta hand it to you－you sureknow how to cook!

我不得不讚美你一番，你真的很會煮！

have the upper hand

中文「先手」是下棋時先下的一方，得先手者因取得主動權而「佔優勢，掌握局面」，與英文的 have the upper hand 不謀而合。要表示勝過某人，句型為 get the upper hand + on +某人。

A: Who do you think is gonna win the fight？

你認為誰會贏得這場比賽？

B: I think the guy in the red shorts has the upper hand, but it’s hard to say.

我覺得穿紅色短褲的那個人佔上風，不過很難說。
